ECDL

The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is the European-wide qualification which enables people to demonstrate their competence in computer skills.

ECDL has major benefits for organisations, by:

  • Raising the level of competency in computer skills
  • Improving productivity, efficiency and staff motivation
  • Providing a tangible benchmark for competency in computer usage throughout the organisation

No prior knowledge of computer skills is needed to study the ECDL. Staff who are familiar with parts of the syllabus may wish to use the program to supplement their knowledge, fill in gaps and learn additional applications.

How ECDL works
The ECDL syllabus is designed to cover the key concepts of computing, its practical applications and their use in the workplace and society in general. It is broken down into seven modules, each of which must be passed before the ECDL certificate is awarded.
Candidates purchase a logbook listing all the modules. As they pass each module, the accredited Test Centre will sign the logbook. When all the modules have been successfully completed, the logbook is exchanged for a certificate.

The seven modules that make up the ECDL are:

  • Concepts of Information Technology
  • Using the Computer and Managing files
  • Word processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Databases
  • Presentation
  • Information and Communication (email and Internet)

Why ECDL is so effective
ECDL is not like any other qualification - although it utilises the positive aspects of the best.

It is fast becoming the most widely recognised qualification in the field of work-related computer use, because it is targeted at the full spectrum of the population, and because of the support and monitoring of the organisations behind it, such as the British Computer Society in the UK.
